The Abundant Garden

Barbara J. Denk

May 2005

The Abundant Garden is a tribute to design techniques – and details – that can transform any backyard into an “abundant” garden. In Barbara Denk's vibrant and evocative photographs and in Debra Prinzing’s passionate interviews with an extraordinary gathering of garden makers, The Abundant Garden embraces a style of profuse and plentiful garden design. The book celebrates the very spirit of ardent individuality to which beginning and veteran gardeners alike aspire. The Abundant Garden inspires those who view the garden as a medium for artistic expression and gives beginning gardeners steps for creating their own bountiful landscape. It transports you into the intimate world of nine special landscapes and the creative garden makers who tend them. Each landscape expresses a different style; each has been designed with an acute attention to detail. These gardens convey distinct characteristics and personalities, yet there is a common design lexicon, a ribbon that weaves together each of their stories. You'll appreciate abundant garden design with fresh eyes. These ideas will overflow into your own personal landscape.

Words cannot express how magical this trip was for me. Thanks to Sally Ferguson of the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center and Bianca Helderman of the Netherland Board of Tourism and Conventions, I joined six awesome colleagues on a 5-day romp through Holland's most beautiful displays of bulbs. Historical and contemporary gardens together add up to inspiring ideas for gardening with bulbs!
